Today the Northumberland Hussars are based in Newcastle, but the regiment grew from the Newcastle Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry which began in 1819. It was in 1876 that the regiment became the Northumberland Hussars, and by the mid-1800s the army group organised their own race meetings, the first of which was held in August 1864 when still known as the Newcastle Yeomanry. The meetings were popular, with races continuing to be held for the next 20 years under the administration of the Hussars. The meeting on Saturday 30th July 1881 was held on Newcastle Moor, starting at Cot Hill and continuing to the Morpeth Turn before returning to the start. The opening Blagdon Plate was won by Lily Randolph for Trooper Allen, beating Jolly Fellow and Enchanted Minister. The Officers Challenge Cup was claimed by Captain Henderson with Tommy, beating the odds-on 2/5 Happy Man. The final meeting was staged on Saturday 9th August 1884, although racing of a minor nature did continue after this point in fields near the camp in Rothbury. |
